Up Up and only part of the way...

Where to go in the summer of 2024? We wanted a place with rugged mountains, cool canyons, interesting culture, and maybe a little off the beaten path (but not needing a transpacific flight - Dan's rule this year) . After narrowing it down, we decided on Slovenia.

The spreadsheet is complete and the bags are packed - we're off and rolling. I always have a little bit of trepidation before any trip and this trip is no different. Hopefully there won't be any major mishaps. We left James in charge of things at home and asked him to try to keep everything alive that should be alive.

Dan and I both went to work on the day of our departure. We received notice while at work that our flight was delayed so we were able to take a later Concord Coach to Logan airport and even had time to swing by Jersey Mike's to get a yummy dinner to eat at the airport. The airport was a zoo! It took us hours to check in and go through security - but we had plenty of time as a result of our delayed flight. We asked a Lufthansa rep about our connecting flight and he thought we would probably make it - Dan and I were skeptical, but remained hopeful.

A massive sea of humanity at the check in for our flight - the line took over 1.5 hrs

Despite running like the wind through the Munich airport, we missed our connecting flight to Ljubljana as a result of the delayed flight from Boston. After chatting with a kind Lufthansa representative at the customer service desk (perhaps one of the unhappiest places in the airport), she said we could try to fly standby in 7 hours. Otherwise, we would have to fly out the next day. That would throw a monkey wrench into the trip plan - it's kind of like a house of cards. And it's part of the travel experience. She gave us 2 $15 vouchers for food and wished us luck. Dan started dreaming about going to the BMW museum in Munich and I crossed my fingers that we would be spending the night in Ljubljana.

We settled into a lounge type area (we weren't allowed to use the Lufthansa Lounge) to catch some zzz's. It's not often that we have a big chunk of time with nothing to do, so we read, slept, people watched, and got an airport meal.

Did we catch the flight to Ljubljana or spend the night in Munich? Stayed tuned for the next blog post 😉

Update: You guessed it - we're in Munich for the night. Lufthansa put us up in a hotel in an industrial park that included dinner and breakfast. I got really excited about the dinner but it turns out that it was just a frozen pizza - grrrrr. One thing that is kind of cool (in addition to becoming experts of the Munich Airport) is that the UEFA Championships (Euro Cup '24) are in Munich right now. So there are lots of ultra soccer fans milling about in all sorts of outfits to support their team.

So far our trip to Slovenia has involved LOTS of waiting in lines. We're ready for a change of pace tomorrow. Our flight to Slovenia is supposed to leave Munich by 11:35am. Fingers crossed...
